“Messi’s Kolkata Visit Marred by Chaos — Alleged Coal Scam Funds and political Interference Exposed.
Lionel Messi’s much‑anticipated “GOAT Tour” in Kolkata on 13 December 2025 ended in chaos and disappointment.
Organisation and Sponsorship
The event was primarily organised by event manager Satadru Dutta, working in coordination with the West Bengal government. It was heavily sponsored by Sonoka Industry, a company owned by Vinay Mishra, coal a close associate of TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee. Mishra is a prime suspect in the coal scam and left India years ago to escape arrest. Allegations suggest that money linked to him was used to fund the event, raising concerns of money laundering.
Messi’s Arrival and Hotel Incident
Messi landed at Kolkata Airport just after midnight on 13 December. He was escorted by TMC minister Sujit Bose. The footballer was scheduled to meet around 40 guests at the hotel, but Bose arranged for nearly 100 people including his relatives and ftiends to attend. This created a disturbing situation for Messi, forcing him to spend longer time at the hotel than planned. Observers believe Bose used the opportunity to show his influence by surrounding Messi with more people than agreed.
Chaos at Salt Lake Stadium
Messi reached Salt Lake Stadium late, already unsettled by the earlier disruption. Thousands of fans were waiting eagerly, many having paid more than ₹8,000 for tickets. However, once Messi entered the ground, another TMC minister, Arup Biswas, was seen closely surrounding him. Relatives of ministers and other dignitaries crowded Messi, taking selfies, photographs, and autographs.
This went on for nearly 20 minutes. Ordinary spectators in the stands had no chance to see Messi properly. The main organiser appealed for the crowd to step back, but nobody listened. Irritated and overwhelmed, Messi left the stadium abruptly.
Public Reaction and Violence
Fans inside the stadium, angry at being denied even a glimpse of their hero, turned violent. They vandalised property, and the police present could not control the mob. The incident has been widely condemned, with particular criticism directed at minister Arup Biswas and others who surrounded Messi on the pitch.
Aftermath and Accountability
Following the fiasco, organiser Satadru Dutta was arrested, and an enquiry committee has been formed. However, responsibility does not lie with satadru alone. The government was directly involved in the event, and the police failed in their duty to maintain law and order.
The sponsorship by Vinay Mishra’s company adds another layer of controversy. With Mishra linked to the coal scam and closely associated with Abhishek Banerjee, questions of money laundering and political complicity are now unavoidable.
Conclusion
The GOAT Tour in Kolkata was meant to be a celebration of football and a once‑in‑a‑lifetime experience for fans. Instead, it became a symbol of mismanagement, political interference, and public betrayal. The West Bengal government and TMC leaders cannot escape responsibility for the chaos, nor for the deeper questions about the money and motives behind the event.
