The Problem of Politicians Getting Rich from Dodgy Dealings

Many politicians in India, such as MLAs (Members of the Legislative Assembly) and MPs (Members of Parliament), build up massive amounts of wealth whilst in office. Sadly, a huge chunk of this money often can't be explained by their official salaries and is clearly dodgy.

Politicians Getting Rich Overnight

This problem isn't just about one person. When politicians get power, loads of them seem to become wealthy incredibly quickly. For example, in West Bengal, several members of the ruling party have gathered enormous assets that are clearly way beyond what their known income should allow.

One candidate, when asked why he wanted to stand in an election, openly admitted that winning would let him make loads of money. This attitude seems to apply to most politicians in India, except for a small number who stay honest.

The Case of Jayalalithaa

Jayalalithaa, a former film actress and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, is a famous example. She died in hospital under mysterious circumstances, where no visitors were allowed, and CCTV cameras were removed from certain areas to keep things secret.

She never married and had no natural heirs. Her assets were worth around 4,000 crores (roughly £380 million). During her acting career, her earnings were estimated at only 2.5 crores (about £240,000).

The courts found that a massive part of her wealth couldn't be proven as legitimate. Her proper earnings were passed on legally to her niece, nephew, and others. However, the main bulk of her assets, gained during her time in politics, came from corrupt dealings. She abused her position to grab properties and valuables in ways that were completely unfair and disproportionate. These ill-gotten assets will now go to the government treasury.

A Better Way Forward

It would help the government and ordinary people if all wrongly acquired assets from politicians were handed over to the state treasury. This money could support public services and make things fairer for everyone.
