Ukraine Wants Zelensky to Meet Trump This Week to End the War

Ukraine is pushing hard for President Volodymyr Zelensky to fly to the United States this very week and sit down face-to-face with President Donald Trump. The reason is simple: both sides believe they are now very close to a real peace deal that could stop Russia’s three-year war.

Over the weekend in Geneva, American and Ukrainian teams cut Trump’s original 28-point plan down to 19 points. Zelensky says the new version is much fairer to Ukraine. He still refuses to give Russia legal ownership of Crimea and parts of Donbas, calling them “stolen land.”

Trump has promised to finish the war fast—maybe even before American Thanksgiving this Thursday. A top U.S. official says Ukraine has already accepted most of the plan, which offers an immediate ceasefire, stronger protection for Ukraine, and money from Ukraine’s rare minerals.

European leaders from Britain, France, and Germany helped rewrite the deal so Ukraine can keep a bigger army and still dream of joining NATO one day. Russia is angry about those changes, but President Putin told Turkey’s leader he could accept the American plan “in principle”—as long as Moscow keeps the land it seized.

Meanwhile, Russian missiles are still hitting Ukraine. At least six people died in attacks last night.

The White House has not yet said “yes” to a meeting this week, and some reports of fixed dates were called premature. Trump only said, “Something good might be happening, but don’t believe it until you see it.”

Many Ukrainians are tired of war and want peace, but some worry any quick deal could force them to give up too much. In the U.S., some of Trump’s friends want to stop sending money and weapons to Ukraine.

Right now, American and Russian officials are talking in Abu Dhabi, and Ukraine’s allies will hold an online meeting tomorrow. Everyone hopes a Trump–Zelensky handshake this week can finally bring peace. Ukrainians just pray it will be a fair one that keeps their country whole.
