special tribunal has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death

A special tribunal has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death for crimes against humanity linked to the 2024 student-led uprising. The court held her responsible for ordering a violent crackdown using drones, helicopters and lethal force that resulted in mass casualties.

Hasina, currently in exile in India, rejected the verdict as politically motivated and “rigged.” The judgement can be appealed before Bangladesh’s Supreme Court, while security has been tightened across Dhaka amid fears of unrest.
