Roles are written for Amitabh Bachchan but...' Hema Malini said this big thing about Bollywood actresses..
Recently, in an interview, veteran actress and politician Hema Malini made an honest and emotional comment about her long-time co-star Amitabh Bachchan. Her words touched many people.
She said, “Roles are specially written for Amitabh Bachchan. But for heroines of my age… there’s hardly anything. That’s the truth.”
Hema ji is 76 now. She didn’t say this out of anger or complaint — she was just telling the truth about how the film industry works. Even though she is a legendary actress, meaningful roles for senior women are very rare. On the other hand, Amitabh Bachchan, who is 83, still gets big, strong, well-written roles in major films.
This shows a big difference in Bollywood.
Male actors in their 70s and 80s are still given powerful characters — like Amitabh in Brahmastra, Kalki 2898 AD, or Section 108. But senior actresses like Hema Malini, Rekha, or Waheeda Rehman usually get only small parts, often as mothers or grandmothers, with very little importance.
Hema ji keeps herself busy with dance, politics, and occasional films (her last major film was Shimla Mirchi in 2020). But she clearly misses the strong, memorable roles she once did in movies like Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay, and Baghban.
Her point is not about jealousy. She deeply respects Amitabh Bachchan — they have worked together in many classics. She only wants to highlight how Bollywood continues to create great roles for older male actors but forgets to do the same for older female actors.
After her interview, fans filled social media with love and support. Many said, “We want Hema ji back in a full movie role!” and “Give our Dream Girl the roles she truly deserves!”
Let’s hope filmmakers take this seriously.
Age should never limit real talent.
Both Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini still have so much to offer. The screen becomes brighter when legends like them get the roles they deserve.
Here’s hoping we see more strong and meaningful roles for our senior actresses. They have earned it.
