Katkar felt awkward performing amid 2,000 background dancers, all men except her.
Who is the choreographer of Amitabh Bachchan starred song ‘Jumma…’? How did they struggle to make that song?
Chinni Prakash is the choreographer of the iconic song "Jumma Chumma De De" from the 1991 film Hum, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Kimi Katkar.
Creating the song's choreography involved several challenges during the 1989–90 shoot. One major hurdle was the bold hook step, where Bachchan lifts and spins Katkar; he worried it would look vulgar due to his height and age difference with the 24-years-younger co-star, even requesting three months to rehearse and nearly asking for its removal, while director Mukul Anand was also hesitant. Prakash's assistants were reluctant to demonstrate it to Bachchan late at night, so he did it himself, and after initial doubts, the step was kept and later praised by Jaya Bachchan as "superb" during a screening.
The shoot at Mukesh Mills added physical and logistical difficulties, with no advanced tech, so everything—from lighting to effects—was handled manually.
In the water-spray sequence, high-pressure fire hoses (not a prop nozzle) were used, throwing Katkar 20 feet and causing her to fall off a cliff, resulting in injuries.
Additionally, Katkar felt awkward performing amid 2,000 background dancers, all men except her.
Despite these obstacles, the six-minute song became a massive hit, earning Prakash a Filmfare Award for Best Choreography.
