Cough Syrup Scandal in India

In 2025, several Indian-made cough syrups—most notably Coldrif by Sresan Pharmaceuticals—were found to contain diethylene glycol (DEG), a highly toxic industrial solvent.  Some batches had DEG concentrations nearly 500 times the permissible limit.  These contaminated syrups have been linked to the deaths of young children due to acute kidney failure.

Regulatory failures are at the heart of the scandal: inspections revealed that the manufacturer had operated for years with more than 300 critical violations, including poor hygiene, lack of proper testing, and failure to verify every batch of raw materials.  Authorities have since banned the syrups, recalled products, and arrested company officials.

This crisis underscores a deep breakdown in drug safety oversight in India.
