Breakthrough in Ukraine Peace Talks: Trump Sends Envoy to Moscow as Zelenskyy Shows Readiness

In an important step toward ending the war in Ukraine, President Donald Trump has announced that he is sending his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, to Moscow

for major talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This comes as Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says his country is ready to “move forward” with a U.S.-backed peace plan, raising hopes for a possible breakthrough.

At a White House event, Trump said the negotiations are “very close” to a deal, with only a few issues still unresolved. He added, “We’re going to get there.” Witkoff will meet Putin next week, while U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll will travel to Kyiv for discussions with Ukrainian leaders. Trump also said he will not meet either Putin or Zelenskyy until the agreement is almost finalized.

Zelenskyy, speaking to the 30-nation “Coalition of the Willing” that supports Ukraine, said Ukraine accepts the main ideas of the peace plan agreed upon in Geneva last week. He said, “We are ready to move forward,” but pointed out that difficult issues remain, such as security guarantees and disputed territories. His chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, suggested that a Trump-Zelenskyy meeting could happen as early as Thanksgiving.

The updated peace plan—based on an earlier 28-point proposal—aims to stop a war that has killed hundreds of thousands since Russia invaded in 2022. Major sticking points include Russia wanting formal recognition of the areas it has taken, like Donetsk, while Ukraine wants strong, long-term security protections similar to NATO.

Russian officials say they welcome the talks but insist any deal must follow earlier understandings made between the U.S. and Russia at a summit in Alaska in August.

U.S. officials are hopeful. One official told NBC that Ukraine has agreed to the main terms of the peace deal, with only small details left. However, some European countries remain cautious, worried that too many compromises could weaken Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Meanwhile, Russia launched more missiles at Kyiv, killing at least three people. As the world watches, a successful agreement could finally bring relief to millions affected by the war. Trump posted on social media: “Peace is within reach.”
