After Mamata Didi’s Letter to ECI – Please Don’t Stop the SIR Work in Bengal
Mamata Banerjee has now written to the Election Commission saying the SIR must be stopped because Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are under “huge pressure” and “their lives are in danger”.
With all respect, this looks a little exaggerated.
Take the recent sad case in Konnagar: the BLO (Tapati Biswas) got a brain stroke and is in hospital. But everyone knows she already had high BP and diabetes for years and was not taking her medicines properly or check-ups properly. It is very sad, but it is not fair to say the SIR work alone caused it. Saying so only spreads fear.
Lakhs of BLOs across Bengal are doing the same work every day and are perfectly fine. If big leaders keep saying “people are dying because of SIR”, many BLOs will get scared, stop working, and the whole voter-list cleaning will come to a halt.
So Election Commission should consider the following points diligently :
1. Check how much real “extreme pressure” is actually there – don’t just believe loud statements.
2. Give BLOs proper help – extra people to share the work, fixed hours, health check-ups, and rest days – so nobody falls sick.
3. Do not stop or pause the SIR in Bengal just because of these claims.
4. Talk to the BLOs directly, reassure them, and tell them they are safe and supported.
The voter list must be cleaned properly so that 2026 elections are fair. keep the SIR going smoothly.
