Aamir Khan’s Double Standards: Why Indians Should Speak Up
Let’s talk honestly about something many Indians have been feeling for years. Aamir Khan — the actor we admired in Lagaan, Dangal, 3 Idiots — has always presented himself as a socially aware, responsible celebrity. He talks about issues like intolerance, women’s safety, and education. But when we look closely at his actions, they don’t match his big speeches. This gap between his words and actions feels unfair, and many Indians believe it’s time to point it out clearly.
1. The 2015 “Intolerance” Comment
Back in 2015, Aamir said in an interview that his wife Kiran Rao felt India had become so “intolerant” that they should consider leaving the country. This comment hurt a lot of Indians. Many felt he was indirectly calling the whole nation unsafe for minorities.
But did he leave?
No.
He continued living in India, acted in movies, and earned huge money from the same country he called “intolerant.” If he truly felt unsafe, shouldn’t he have moved? Instead, the controversy gave massive attention right before the release of his film Dangal. Many people felt it looked less like concern and more like clever publicity.
2. His Love for Turkey
Aamir has visited Turkey several times and even met President Erdogan warmly. He praised Turkey, saying it “felt like home,” and shot parts of his films there. On the surface, nothing is wrong with liking another country.
But Turkey has openly taken positions against India for decades.
It has supported Pakistan on issues like Kashmir, spoken against India in global forums, and even blocked India’s international progress. Today too, Turkey’s leaders often criticise India unfairly.
At the same time, Turkey has its own serious human-rights problems — jailed journalists, attacks on minorities, restrictions on freedom — but Aamir never speaks a word about that. He criticises India easily but stays silent about Turkey’s issues. This double standard makes many Indians uncomfortable. If he is truly “secular” and “fearless,” why not speak about all countries equally?
3. What About Our Soldiers?
Indian soldiers have sacrificed their lives fighting Pakistan, and Pakistan enjoys strong support from Turkey. So when Aamir hugs Erdogan or praises Turkey as “brotherly,” many Indians feel it’s disrespectful to our soldiers’ sacrifices. Fans expect their favourite stars to at least avoid being close to nations that openly work against Indian interests.
4. Contradictions in His Work and Endorsements
Aamir has preached a lot of social messages through TV shows and films. But his choices often contradict those messages:
He spoke about harmful pesticides and farmer suicides on Satyamev Jayate, but later endorsed a product linked to similar issues.
He talks about women’s safety but stayed quiet on Bollywood’s #MeToo movement until it became safe to speak.
His movie PK openly mocked Hindu practices — which is fine for satire — but he has never made similar commentary on other religions. Many feel this shows selective bravery, based on what is convenient for him.
5. It’s Not About Hating Aamir
No one is denying that Aamir is a brilliant actor. Films like Taare Zameen Par have touched millions of hearts. But when he talks about national or social issues, people take him seriously. So it’s fair to expect honesty and consistency from him. When public figures say one thing but do another, it confuses young people and weakens genuine activism.
6. Why Indians Should Speak Up
Indians today want transparency. If Aamir criticises India but praises countries that oppose us, people have every right to question him. Protesting, calling out double standards, or choosing not to watch his movies — these are peaceful democratic ways to show disagreement.
Aamir can easily clear the air if he wants. He can speak fairly about Turkey’s anti-India actions or acknowledge that his old statements were exaggerated. But until he does, many Indians will continue to feel he is being selective and unfair.
In the End
India is diverse, tolerant, and full of opportunities — that’s why Aamir could rise to fame here. But Indians don’t appreciate when someone uses the country’s freedom to paint it negatively while staying silent about real issues elsewhere.
If you agree, speak up. India deserves honesty from everyone — especially its biggest stars.
Jai Hind.
