Pope Francis, the first Latin American and first non-European pope in nearly 1,300 years, has died at the age of 88, the Vatican announced on Monday morning. He passed away at 7:35 AM, after a papacy marked by efforts to reform the Catholic Church and address social issues with compassion, despite facing internal divisions and health challenges in recent years
.


Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican camerlengo, announced the death, highlighting Francis' dedication to serving the poor and marginalized and his embodiment of Gospel values with courage and love.

Pope Francis had recently recovered from severe double pneumonia and had struggled with various ailments including diverticulitis, bronchitis, and mobility issues. His body will be displayed at St. Peter's Basilica, but he is expected to be buried at the Basilica of St. Mary Major outside the Vatican, according to his wishes.

The Catholic Church will enter a mourning period before cardinals convene in a conclave to elect his successor.
