Power outages possible as storm system brings freezing rain to GTA this weekend

A significant storm system is set to impact the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) this weekend, bringing widespread freezing rain and the potential for power outages. Environment Canada has issued warnings for freezing rain, particularly in Durham and York Regions, where ice accretion could reach up to 10 mm, leading to dangerous road conditions and possible power interruptions due to ice-laden trees and power lines.

The storm is expected to begin Friday evening and continue through Sunday, with two rounds of freezing rain forecasted. The first round will start tonight, transitioning from rain to freezing rain, while the second round may bring additional icy conditions on Sunday morning. Areas north of the GTA are at higher risk for prolonged freezing rain, which could last 5-10 hours, potentially resulting in more significant impacts.

Travel is strongly discouraged during this period, as road conditions are likely to be icy and hazardous. Residents are advised to stay updated on local weather alerts and prepare for possible disruptions due to the storm's severity.
