Kolkata-born Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak has been awarded the 2025 Holberg Prize, recognized as the closest equivalent to the Nobel Prize in the humanities, social sciences, law, and theology. This prestigious accolade honors her significant contributions to literary theory and philosophy, particularly her interdisciplinary research in comparative literature, translation, postcolonial studies, political philosophy, and feminist theory.
Spivak expressed her gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the importance of humanities in fostering a desire for societal good. She noted that "no law or policy can prevail if people do not want it," highlighting her commitment to education and activism. The Holberg Prize committee praised her as one of the most influential global intellectuals of our time, noting her efforts to combat illiteracy in marginalized communities across several countries, including India.
The award ceremony is scheduled for June 5, 2025, at the University of Bergen in Norway, where she will receive approximately $540,000 as part of the prize. Spivak's notable works include her seminal essay "Can the Subaltern Speak?" which has sparked extensive scholarship and debate on the representation of marginalized voices in academia.
