The cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C. have reached stage 5 of their blooming cycle, known as the "Puffy White" stage, indicating they are one step away from peak bloom. This stage is characterized by fully formed blossoms with closed petals. The National Park Service (NPS) anticipates that peak bloom will occur between March 28 and March 31 this year, which aligns with historical averages for the Tidal Basin area.
The blooming process consists of six stages:
Stage 1: Green buds appear
Stage 2: Florets become visible
Stage 3: Florets extend
Stage 4: Peduncles elongate
Stage 5: Puffy blossoms (current stage)
Stage 6: Peak bloom (when approximately 70% of the blossoms are open)
Weather conditions significantly influence the timing of these stages, with daily temperatures affecting how quickly the blossoms progress. Last year, peak bloom was reached on March 17.
