ChatGPT recently experienced outages amidst a surge in requests for Studio Ghibli-style images generated by its new GPT-4o image tool. The feature, introduced this week, became wildly popular, leading to server strain and temporary rate limits to manage demand. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman humorously described the situation as "GPUs melting" and paused free-tier access to the image generator while paid tiers retained functionality.

The trend sparked controversy over copyright concerns, with critics accusing OpenAI of exploiting Studio Ghibli's iconic art style, which its founder Hayao Miyazaki has criticized as “an insult to life itself.” OpenAI has since blocked requests for Ghibli-style images and restricted the tool’s usage for free-tier users46.
