Storm to hit Central New York this weekend; winter weather warning issued

Watchmore

Central New York is bracing for extreme winter weather, including two winter storms and a polar vortex. A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for much of Central New York, including Oneida, Madison, Onondaga, and Cayuga Counties.

Timing and Precipitation:

  • First Storm: A low-pressure system is expected to bring a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain from late Wednesday night into Thursday. There's a possibility of heavy freezing rain, which could cause a glaze of ice on roads and sidewalks. Overnight temperatures Wednesday are expected around 9 degrees in the Utica area, with estimates of about a quarter of an inch of ice accumulation. This may lead to scattered power outages due to ice-laden tree branches and power lines.
  • Second Storm: Another low-pressure system is expected to impact the region on Saturday and into Super Bowl Sunday, potentially bringing more snow and slushy conditions1. Exact snowfall totals for that storm are currently uncertain.
  • Arctic Air: Around Tuesday, February 11, another blast of arctic air from Canada is expected to push south, impacting Minnesota and Michigan before flowing toward the East Coast. This air mass could mix with a low-pressure system, potentially resulting in a significant snowfall1.
Snowfall and Temperatures:
  • The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) indicates that Central New York, the Capitol Region, and the Southern Tier are at a slight risk for significant snowfall events between February 11 and 17.
  • Temperatures will generally remain around freezing during the day for the remainder of the week, with overnight lows in the mid-teens and single digits1. This may result in the formation of ice and black ice.
