Federal prosecutors in New York and Washington resign after refusing to drop Adams charges

Danielle Sassoon, the acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, resigned after being directed to drop corruption allegations against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The order to drop the case came from the Justice Department. Sassoon, a Republican appointed as interim U.S. attorney the previous month, refused to comply, stating she was "confident" Adams had committed the crimes.
The Justice Department's directive cited Adams' importance in addressing "illegal immigration and violent crime" as the reason for dropping the case. Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, who had been Trump's personal criminal defense lawyer, directed that the case be dropped so Adams could aid Trump's immigration crackdown and campaign for reelection.
Bove also accepted Sassoon's resignation and placed three assistant U.S. attorneys involved in the case on leave while investigations into their actions are conducted.
Two senior officials from the Justice Department's Public Integrity Section, John Keller and Kevin Driscoll, also resigned after being asked to take over the Adams case. The indictments against Adams included bribery and campaign finance violations.
