Duolingo Announces Death of Their Owl Mascot

Watchmore

Duolingo has announced the death of its famous green owl mascot, Duo, in a dramatic social media post. The company humorously hinted that Duo might have died waiting for users to complete their lessons, a nod to the owl's relentless reminders.

Duolingo also requested users to refrain from sharing why they disliked Duo in the comments, but if they insisted, to include their credit card details to be automatically signed up for Duolingo Max in his memory.

Key details about Duo and the announcement:
  • The company joked that the owl had 'many enemies' and urged netizens not to share 'why you hate him in the comments'.
  • Duolingo has also updated their profile photo on X/Twitter to one of Duo's with crosses over his eyes.
  • Duolingo also noted that Duo “had many enemies” but urged people not to flood the comments with reasons for their dislike.
  • In a separate post, the company shared an 'In Memorium' for the owl, featuring a black and white photo of the mascot along with its name, 'Duo Keyshauna Renee Lingo' AKA 'Duo the Owl'. It also included the owl's lifespan - '1000 BC - 2025 AD'.
  • The company joked that netizens should 'do a Duolingo lesson' in 'lieu of flowers' for the owl and added, "We're currently investigating Jimmy".
  • Duo first appeared in 2011 when the app was launched. Over the years, he evolved into a 3D animated character, becoming more expressive and interactive.
Brands like Netflix have joined in on the joke, with Netflix posting a video of Duo being eliminated from "Squid Game," captioned, "Sending my condolences fr (for real)”. The company claimed that an investigation was underway.
