Dick Jauron, former bears, Bills head coach, dies at 74

Dick Jauron, a former NFL player and coach, passed away on Saturday at the age of 74 after battling cancer.

  • He was a two-sport star at Yale in the early 1970s and was drafted by both the Detroit Lions (NFL) and the St. Louis Cardinals (MLB). He chose to play football, spending five seasons as a defensive back with the Lions and three with the Cincinnati Bengals.
  • He transitioned into coaching and became the defensive backs coach for the Buffalo Bills in 1985. He also coached defensive backs with the Green Bay Packers.
  • In 1995, he became the defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
  • He was the head coach of the Chicago Bears from 1999 to 2003, earning AP Coach of the Year in 2001 after leading the Bears to a 13-3 record and the NFC Central title. The Bears' postseason run ended with a loss to Philadelphia in the divisional round.
  • Jauron served as the head coach of the Buffalo Bills from 2006 to 2009.
