Caribbean Earthquake Sparks Tsunami Warning

A powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Caribbean Sea on Saturday. The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported the earthquake's epicenter was approximately 125 miles south-southwest of George Town in the Cayman Islands and about 20 miles north of Honduras. The quake occurred at a shallow depth of about 6 miles.
Tsunami warnings and advisories were issued for several Caribbean countries and territories, including Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Cuba, Mexico, Honduras, Bahamas, Belize, Haiti, Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, and Guatemala. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned of potential hazardous tsunami waves within 620 miles of the epicenter.
Tsunami waves were predicted to reach 1 to 3 meters above tide level along Cuba’s coast.Coastal residents were urged to move to higher ground as a precaution. Although initial warnings were issued, most tsunami alerts were later canceled. The National Tsunami Warning Center confirmed the tsunami threat had subsided but noted that unusual currents may still be noticed in some areas. A minor tsunami measuring 1.2 inches was recorded in Isla Mujeres, Mexico. There have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.
