4.0 magnitude earthquake jolts Delhi-NCR out of sleep, big tremors, rumbling noise

On February 17, 2025, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) at 5:36 AM IST. The earthquake's epicenter was in Delhi, at a shallow depth of 5 kilometers. Tremors were felt across Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad, causing residents to rush out of their homes.

The National Center for Seismology (NCS) pinpointed the epicenter at latitude 28.59°N and longitude 77.16°E. There were no immediate reports of structural damage or casualties. Delhi Police reassured citizens via X and urged them to call emergency helpline 112 if needed.

Delhi is located around 250 kilometers from the highly active Himalayan collision zone and frequently experiences seismic activity. The region is in Seismic Zone IV on India’s seismic zoning map, which means it remains at moderate to high risk from Himalayan-origin earthquakes.
