Washington plane crash

A tragic mid-air collision occurred on Wednesday night near Reagan National Airport in Washington, DC, involving an American Airlines passenger jet and a US Army Black Hawk helicopter.

Key Details:

  • The American Airlines Flight 5342 (a PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700) was carrying 60 passengers and 4 crew members from Wichita, Kansas
  • The US Army helicopter had 3 soldiers aboard and was on a nighttime training exercise12
  • The aircraft collided while the plane was approaching Runway 33 at approximately 9 PM local time
Casualties and Rescue:

  • At least 18 bodies have been recovered from the Potomac River
  • No survivors have been found as of 11:30 PM ET
  • Approximately 300 emergency responders are conducting search and rescue operations in extremely challenging conditions
Immediate Aftermath:
  • All flights at Reagan National Airport were suspended
  • The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the incident
  • Several members of the US figure skating community were reportedly aboard the flight
President Donald Trump commented that the crash "should have been prevented" and called it a "bad situation".

White House fires National Security Agency chief

Watch more The White House has fired General Timothy Haugh, the director of the National Security Agency (NSA), and his deputy, Wendy Noble. Haugh also led U.S. Cyber Command, overseeing both offensive and defensive cyber operations.
