What to know about the death of a woman who was set on fire

A horrific incident occurred on a New York City subway where a woman was set on fire while sleeping on an F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station. Sebastian Zapeta, a 33-year-old undocumented immigrant from Guatemala, was arrested and charged with first and second-degree murder and arson.

  • The victim was sleeping when Zapeta approached her and set her on fire using a lighter
  • Her clothing became "fully engulfed in a matter of seconds"

Arrest and Investigation

  • Zapeta remained at the scene after the attack, sitting on a platform bench
  • Three high school students helped identify him after police released surveillance images
  • Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch called it "one of the most depraved crimes one person could possibly commit"
The suspect and victim did not appear to know each other, and the motive remains unclear. The victim was believed to be homeless and appeared to have mobility challenges, with a walker found near her.

White House fires National Security Agency chief
