Pope opens Holy Door to kick off special jubilee year

Pope Francis officially launched the 2025 Jubilee Year on Christmas Eve by opening the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica


This historic event, taking place during the Christmas Eve Mass, marks the beginning of the Ordinary Jubilee, which occurs every 25 years

  • Approximately 7,000 people attended inside the Basilica
  • Thousands more watched on screens in St. Peter's Square
  • The Pope, seated in a wheelchair, knocked five times on the door before it was opened
  • The theme is "Pilgrims of Hope"

For the first time in Jubilee tradition, Pope Francis will also open a fifth sacred portal in a Roman prison on December 26, symbolizing hope and inclusion. The Jubilee Year will conclude on January 6, 2026, with the closing of the Holy Door.
