Shamima Begum will not return to the UK. Her latest legal attempts to challenge the removal of her British citizenship have been definitively rejected:

Key Developments:
  • Supreme Court unanimously refused her appeal
  • Court of Appeal upheld the decision to strip her citizenship
  • She remains in a Syrian refugee camp controlled by armed guards
Legal Status:

  • Citizenship revoked in 2019 on national security grounds
  • Judges stated her appeal "does not present a debatable legal issue"
  • UN experts have called for her repatriation, but UK government maintains its stance
Despite arguments that she was a trafficking victim and was only 15 when she traveled to Syria, the UK government has consistently maintained that her return poses a national security threat. Begum, now 25, will continue to reside in the Roj refugee camp in northeastern Syria with no immediate prospect of returning to the United Kingdom.
