Governor Gavin Newsom declared a State of Emergency in California to address the escalating bird flu (H5N1) outbreak. Key details of the emergency response include:

  • 61 total human bird flu cases across the U.S., with 34 cases in California
  • Virus detected in 645 dairy herds in the state
  • No confirmed person-to-person transmission
  • First severe human case reported in Louisiana
The emergency proclamation aims to:

  • Provide state and local agencies additional flexibility
  • Streamline staffing and contracting processes
  • Enhance monitoring and containment efforts
California has already implemented the nation's largest testing and monitoring system. The state is working closely with federal agencies like the CDC, USDA, and FDA to:
  • Distribute personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Provide seasonal flu vaccines
  • Conduct public awareness campaigns
  • Support agriculture workers
Governor Newsom emphasized that while the public risk remains low, the state is committed to preventing virus spread and protecting public health.
