Kilauea volcano erupted on December 23, 2024, creating a spectacular display of volcanic activity. The eruption began around 2:20 a.m. local time within the Halemaʻumaʻu crater at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Key details include:

Eruption Characteristics

Scientific Observations

Ken Hon, lead scientist at the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, described it as a "very substantial eruption" with a relatively swift onset. This marks the fifth eruption in the summit region since December 2020.The volcano drew large crowds to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, with the USGS providing a livestream for those unable to witness the event in person. By 5 p.m., the eruption had significantly diminished, covering just over one square mile.
