Europa league new format explained

The UEFA Europa League is undergoing significant changes for the 2024/25 season, transitioning from a traditional group stage to a new single league format. Here are the key features of this revamped structure:

  • Single League Phase: The tournament will feature 36 teams competing in a league format instead of the previous group stage, where teams were divided into smaller groups.
  • Match Structure: Each team will play eight matches—four at home and four away—against eight different opponents, drawn from four seeded pots.
  • Advancement Criteria: The top eight teams in the league will automatically qualify for the knockout stage (Round of 16), while teams ranked ninth to 24th will enter a playoff to secure their place in the knockout rounds. Teams finishing 25th or lower will be eliminated from all European competitions.
  • No Champions League Dropouts: Unlike previous seasons, there will be no teams dropping down from the Champions League, which alters the competitive landscape of the tournament.
This new format aims to increase the number of matches and enhance competition, providing fans with more exciting fixtures throughout the season.
