Denmark has rejected Japan's request to extradite anti-whaling activist Paul Watson over criminal charges from 2010. Watson, the 74-year-old founder of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, was arrested in July when his ship docked in Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory.

Key Details

  • Japan sought Watson's extradition for allegedly:
    • Breaking into a Japanese vessel in Antarctic Ocean
    • Causing property damage
    • Obstructing business operations
    • Causing injury
The Danish justice ministry decided against extradition, considering:

  • The charges are over 14 years old
  • Duration of Watson's detention
  • Nature of the alleged acts
Watson's lawyer, Jonas Christoffersen, confirmed he is now a free man and will likely return home soon.
