Daniel Penny acquitted of

Daniel Penny has been acquitted of criminally negligent homicide in the chokehold death of Jordan Neely on a New York City subway.

The verdict was reached after more than 24 hours of jury deliberation over five days. Initially charged with second-degree manslaughter, the jury deadlocked on that charge, leading the judge to dismiss it, allowing them to consider only the lesser charge of negligent homicide.

The courtroom reaction was intense, with mixed responses of applause and anger following the verdict. Neely's father expressed his outrage, while Penny, a former Marine, showed a brief smile before leaving the courtroom.

The case has sparked significant public discourse about issues of race, justice, and the treatment of individuals experiencing homelessness and mental health crises
