Charnobyl dogs are evolving rapidly

Dogs living in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone are experiencing rapid evolution due to radiation exposure, according to recent studies. Researchers from the University of South Carolina and the National Human Genome Research Institute have found significant genetic differences between these dogs and those just 10 miles away.

The dogs in the exclusion zone show distinct genetic markers and adaptations, possibly linked to survival in a high-radiation environment.

Key findings include accelerated genetic divergence, mutations potentially enhancing survival, and altered traits such as coat pigmentation. While the research suggests radiation may be accelerating evolutionary processes, separating its effects from factors like inbreeding remains complex.

This phenomenon highlights how life can adapt in extreme conditions, making Chernobyl a unique site for studying rapid genetic changes in animals.
