California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in response to the escalating bird flu (H5N1) outbreak

The emergency was prompted by the first severe human case of bird flu confirmed in Louisiana and the spread of the virus among dairy cattle in Southern California

Key details of the emergency declaration include:
  • 61 total human bird flu cases reported across the U.S., with 34 cases in California
  • No person-to-person transmission has been detected
  • The virus has spread to dairy cattle herds in 16 states
  • The emergency will provide flexibility for state agencies to respond quickly
Governor Newsom emphasized that while the public risk remains low, the state is committed to preventing virus spread and protecting public health. California has already implemented the largest testing and monitoring system in the country to address the outbreak. The declaration follows the CDC confirming a severe bird flu case in a Louisiana patient, marking the first such instance in the United States.
