Brightest meteor shower of the year 2024
The Geminid meteor shower, known as the brightest meteor shower of the year, has arrived and will peak on the nights of December 13 and 14, 2024.
This annual celestial event is expected to produce up to 120 meteors per hour under optimal conditions, although this year, a near-full moon may hinder visibility of fainter meteors.
Key Details:
- Peak Viewing: Best from 9 PM onwards, particularly around 2 AM local time.
- Origin: Unlike most meteor showers that originate from comets, the Geminids come from asteroid 3200 Phaethon, shedding rocky debris that burns up in Earth's atmosphere.
- Visibility: The shower is visible worldwide, with the Northern Hemisphere offering the best views.
Viewing Tips:
- Find a dark location away from city lights.
- Lie back and look towards the constellation Gemini, where the meteors will appear to radiate from.
- Dress warmly and allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness for optimal viewing.
