There is a world outside that exists.

Just four days before his passing, Bibek Debroy penned a poignant and introspective self-obituary, titled "Requiem." In this final reflection, he posed a profound question that encapsulated his contemplation on mortality and the fleeting nature of human existence:

 "There is a world outside that exists. What if I am not there? What indeed?"These words, written from his hospital bed at AIIMS, Delhi, where he was battling health issues, reflect Debroy's starkly honest and existential awareness of his own mortality. He acknowledged the inevitability of his departure and the impermanence of human life, questioning the significance of his own presence in a world that would continue to exist without him.

Once in a while, the bed gets filthy. Simply a piece of tissue loosened up, deprived of ordinary standards of disgrace and unobtrusiveness. Some of the time, in a wheelchair or a clinic streetcar, I'm trucked starting with one structure then onto the next, going through the scuffle, through the sun sparkling, through the birds tweeting on the green trees. There is a world external that exists. Consider the possibility that I am not there. What without a doubt?
