The remuneration and facilities for the President of the United States are comprehensive and include several components beyond the base salary.

Base Salary


The President of the United States earns an annual salary of $400,000, a figure set by Congress in 2001 and unchanged since then

Additional Allowances


Expense Allowance: $50,000 annually for personal and official duties, which is non-taxable. Any unused portion must be returned to the US Treasury at the end of the year

Travel Account: $100,000 annually for official travel expenses, which is also non-taxable


Entertainment Allowance: $19,000 annually for hosting events, including state dinners and other official functions

White House Redecoration: A one-time allowance of $100,000 for redecorating the White House upon assuming office, although some presidents have opted to use personal funds instead

Total Compensation Package


The total annual package, including the base salary and additional allowances, amounts to around $969,000 ($400,000 salary + $569,000 in allowances)

Non-Monetary Benefits


Residence: Free residence at the White House, which includes extensive office spaces, gardens, and other amenities. The President also has access to Camp David, a secluded retreat in Maryland

Transportation: Access to Air Force One, Marine One, and a fleet of armored limousines (known as 'The Beast')

Security: Round-the-clock Secret Service protection, along with security coverage from the FBI and Marines

Healthcare: Comprehensive medical care for the President and their immediate family

Post-Presidency Benefits


After leaving office, former presidents receive:

Annual Pension: Approximately $230,000 per year

Office Space and Staff: Provided funding for office space and staff
