Rohit Bal passed away


Rohit Bal, one of India's most celebrated and influential fashion designers, passed away on November 1, 2024, at the age of 63 due to a cardiac arrest.


Cause of Death

Bal suffered a heart attack and was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Aashlok Hospital in Safdarjung Enclave, Delhi. Despite efforts by doctors to revive him for two hours, he could not be saved


Health Issues

Prior to his death, Bal had been dealing with health challenges, including cardiac issues. He had been admitted to a private hospital in Gurugram in December 2023 for these health problems

Recent Activities

Despite his health issues, Bal had recently made a comeback to the fashion scene. In October 2024, he presented his collection at the Lakme Fashion Week X FDCI 2024 grand finale, showcasing his enduring creativity and influence in the fashion world.


Career and Legacy

Rohit Bal was a pioneering figure in Indian fashion, known for his innovative and elaborate designs that blended Indian grandeur and nobility with modern aesthetics. He launched his independent collection in 1990 and quickly gained international recognition. His designs were favored by Hollywood celebrities and supermodels such as Uma Thurman, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, and Pamela Anderson.

Awards and Recognition: Bal was awarded 'Designer of the Year' at the Indian Fashion Awards in 2006 and was the Lakme Grand Finale Designer for 2012. He was also recognized as the "Iconic Fashion Designer of the country" by the Rajnigandha Pearls India Fashion Awards in 2020


Collaborations: He collaborated with various brands, including Khadi Gram Udyog, Biba Apparels, and the Ada Ba Group. He also designed jewelry, luxury watches, and children's clothing lines

Restaurants: Apart from fashion, Bal was passionate about food and had two restaurants in Delhi, Veda and Cibo, which were known for their unique blend of traditional and contemporary Indian cuisine

Personal Life

Born on May 8, 1961, in Srinagar, Kashmir, Bal graduated with a degree in history from St. Stephen's College, Delhi, and later studied fashion at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). His early life in Kashmir and subsequent move to Delhi due to regional violence significantly influenced his designs, which often reflected his rich cultural heritage.


Rohit Bal's passing has left a profound impact on the Indian fashion industry, and his legacy continues to inspire future generations of designers. His contributions to Indian couture and his ability to merge traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics have been widely praised, and he will be remembered as a true icon in the world of fashion.
