Microsoft 365 experienced a significant outage on November 25, 2024, affecting a wide range of its services globally. Here are the key details:

Cause of the Outage

The outage was attributed to a "recent change" made by Microsoft, which the company quickly identified and began rolling back to restore services

Timeline of the Outage

Reports of issues began surfacing around 4 AM ET, but complaints spiked significantly by 8 AM ET as users started their workday.

By midday, over 5,300 complaints were logged on DownDetector, with most users reporting problems with Exchange and Outlook



Recovery Efforts

Microsoft acknowledged the issue and started deploying a fix, which involved rolling back the problematic update and performing manual restarts on affected machines.

By noon ET, the company reported that the fix had restored service to approximately 98% of the affected environments. However, some users continued to experience delays in accessing Exchange Online and Teams calendars



Ongoing Issues

Despite the significant progress in restoring services, some users still reported issues with Outlook on the web and other services late into the day.

Microsoft continued targeted restarts and monitoring to ensure full restoration, estimating that most services would be fully restored by the following day, November 26
