India team intra squad match

India's cricket team has made a significant change in their preparation strategy for the upcoming Test series against Australia, opting to cancel their planned intra-squad match in favor of focused training sessions.

Reasons for the Decision

The decision was influenced by input from head coach Gautam Gambhir and senior players, who preferred intensive practice sessions over a match scenario. This choice is driven by the need to fine-tune techniques against the pace and bounce of Australian wickets, particularly after India's recent home series loss to New Zealand

The team management believes that dedicated net practice will better prepare the players, especially the top-order batters, to adapt to Australia's seaming and bouncing wickets. Centre-wicket practice at the WACA Ground, which closely resembles the conditions at Optus Stadium, is seen as more beneficial than an intra-squad match

Original Plans

Initially, India had planned a three-day intra-squad match at the WACA Ground in Perth, scheduled from November 15-17. This match was to be played behind closed doors at the request of India's hierarchy. However, there had been hopes that the game might be open to the public, similar to previous matches against a WA XI side before the 2022 T20 World Cup

New Preparation Strategy

Instead of the intra-squad match, the team will engage in net sessions and centre-wicket match simulation scenarios at the WACA. This approach allows for sustained and specific work on techniques and mental adjustments needed to counter Australia's formidable pace battery. Unlike previous tours where practice matches were a key part of the preparation, this time the focus is on customized practice to better prepare the players for the challenging Australian conditions

Impact on India A

The India A squad, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, was supposed to play against India's Test squad as part of their preparation. However, with the cancellation of the intra-squad match, India A will continue with their unofficial Test series in Australia, providing valuable experience in local conditions and aiding the senior squad's future bench strength

This shift in preparation strategy reflects India's commitment to optimizing their readiness for the highly anticipated five-Test series against Australia, which begins on November 22 in Perth.
