Daniel Jones parted ways with the New York Giants after a tumultuous six-year tenure.

Daniel Jones, nicknamed "Danny Dimes," is an American professional football quarterback who recently parted ways with the New York Giants after a tumultuous six-year tenure.

Early Career and Draft

Jones was born on May 27, 1997, in Charlotte, North Carolina. He played college football for the Duke Blue Devils and was selected sixth overall by the New York Giants in the 2019 NFL Draft

Time with the New York Giants

Jones had a promising start to his NFL career, leading the Giants to their first playoff appearance since 2016 in the 2022 season. This success earned him a four-year, $160 million contract extension with the Giants in March 2023

Decline and Release

However, the 2023 season was marred by significant challenges. Jones struggled with injuries, including a neck injury and a torn ACL in his right knee, which ruled him out for the season. His performance was also impacted by the loss of his top pass protector, left tackle Andrew Thomas, who suffered a hamstring injury early in the season. Jones won only three of his 16 starts after signing the contract, throwing 10 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions before being benched in favor of Tommy DeVito

.The final straw came when Jones was demoted to the fourth string and spent part of a practice playing scout-team safety. He subsequently requested his release from the Giants, which was granted on November 22, 2024, just 439 days after signing his lucrative contract

Statistics and Performance

Jones finished his career with the Giants with a 24-45-1 record as a starter, throwing 62 touchdowns and 62 interceptions. His best season was in 2022, where he led the Giants to the playoffs and had a QBR of 62.9, ranking sixth in the NFL. However, his overall QBR since entering the league in 2019 was 53.0, ranking 26th among qualifying quarterbacks

Future Implications

The release of Daniel Jones marks a significant shift for the Giants, who are now focusing on rebuilding and potentially selecting a new quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft. The move also frees up $20 million in salary cap space for the team
