India would already be facing significant environmental challenges even without the impact of climate change

According to historian and environmentalist Ramachandra Guha, India would be facing severe environmental issues even in the absence of climate change. Guha emphasized that India's environmental problems are deeply rooted, noting that the country has the most polluted cities in the world, biologically dead rivers, high rates of chemical contamination of soil, and significant loss of biodiversity

Guha attributed these issues to the dismantling of environmental regulations and safeguards by successive governments since economic liberalization, which has exacerbated the country's environmental degradation.

Therefore, climate change only amplifies the existing environmental challenges that India is already grappling with.
